It's not that it only works with the official client, but that it only works if you IDENTIFY as the official client. It's like how certain features of a webpage will only be available if you identify as Internet Explorer, even though they'll work in your browser just fine.
I'd say it would be best to identify as the official client so that nothing weird happens, even if it is lying.
