One of the short term goals for RhymBox is to support SASL+TLS in conformance with the XMPP specification and some form of message encryption and presence signing.
I agree with the other developers here that the E2E/CPIM document as it currently stands is too kludgy compared to JEP 102 or even the old GPG/PGP support. Hopefully the IETF WG will understand and react to this community feedback.
Each of the current encryption proposals have problems.
- GPG/PGP: The minimum message size is just ridiculous for IM. ("hi" becomes three pages of text.) Adoption on low-end devices might present difficulties due to the crypto engine's memory footprint and processing demands.
- CPIM/E2E: Just plain wrong.
- JEP 102: Does anyone really understand all of that document? Crazy. ;-) Does seem to be the best choice right now.
