So I will try to reproduce your setup at a system here. Which version of
xdb_sql are you using?
 

xdb_sql-1.3 but I updated the files from cvs as there are a few 
bugs/mistakes in mysql for xdb_sql.
I'll send you a tgz of my directory off list.
