Probably you should use a server software that uses a database instead of the filesystem. There are modules for jabberd 1.4.x that implement MySQL storage, jabberd 2 features MySQL out-of-the-box.
Yes; I've downloaded it and am hopefully going to install it today. Last time I tried this, the compilation failed miserably, and the configuration was woefully complex.
