I've written apps using alternately Jabberbeans, Yaja! and Smack, and Smack is *by far* the most reliable and well documented. Smack isn't necessarily the best for writing components (or wasn't when I last used it, but I believe they've done more work in that area since), but its overall XMPP support is superior to everything else I've used.
