I know we'd all hoped the licensing concerns with Jabberd 1.4.x would be solved with the release of v1.4.4. However, it looks like there may still be one more item. I've begun work on packaging the 1.4.4 release and it looks like in order to package it for Debian, I'll have to release the resulting packages and source under only the GPL v2 (which means modifying each file to exercise the GPL only option) and due to this build it without SSL support. As I understand it, a strictly GPL'd application can not be linked against OpenSSL. Any chance of getting a GPL exception from the copyright holders? I've done a cursory check of the source for such and exception, but have not found one currently.
