The docs I saw (can't remember where) said to use % instead of @.  This
is pretty common in virtual hosted ftp servers as well.  Unfortunately
the gateway I used didn't work with this, and I was unable to talk to
people @mac.com. (The gateway was aim.sweeney.ath.cx)
