Hi,

as far as I know, you can't add any contacts, which are not registered
with Google Talk, i.e. Gmail. When adding someone to your roster, Google
sends out an email saying your contact, that he has to register with
their service.

I tried it out this morning, using Gaim and the Google Talk client.
Emails instead of subscription requests :(

If you want to have a Gmail-Account you just need to be added to the
roster using the Google Talk client.

Greetings

Thorsten
