You always look at this from the viewpoint of a network administrator. If you have no control over the network you are in (i.e. you are not an admin), and the only thing you can do is make a tunnel to the outside world, then you need to be able to override the host detected by your protocol. This is why, if you do not allow this in a client, you will never be able to use that client on the network you are working in.
