Attempting to look up an A/AAAA for '.' is wrong though, but it works because there will never be one for '.'.


That's what I wanted to say: jabberd14 is not designed to handle this case especially, but in real world examples, I guess it's doing what is expected (as long as nobody defines a A/AAAA record for the domain root).
