According to Google, you should be able to connect to them on port 443:

But trying an array of third party clients this does not seem to work.
For this reason I started a thread in the Google discussion group on this,
but apart from sharing my analysis of the communications, I haven't
had an answer to what magic is happening:

Writing to Google support just resulted in a canned answer, telling me to
open ports 5222 and 5223, which was not what I had asked. Any ideas?

BTW If you wish to simulate ports 5222 and 5223 being blocked on Windows, then this
