This may be helpful: http://producingoss.com/html-chunk/forks.html IMHO it is *always* best to receive the blessing of the former maintainers before forking or taking over maintenance. If you have tried to contact the current maintainers and they are unresponsive, then post to a public forum such as this one and say "I really want to maintain this code but the current maintainers are missing in action, this message is notice that I would like to take over maintenace" etc. Personally I don't like the j2 name because it is confusing and I'd love it if someone changed the name via fork or new maintainer. But I don't have standing on that project so it's not for me to say.
