To come back at Sander's point, I don't think we can blame client's developers indeed but rather we should wonder why Facebook has dropped their own technology like that?
I highly doubt they are dropping their technology, the web based chat will im sure stay, just like google has the web based gtalk inside of gmail, they are just adding an XMPP interface to their chat app.

Will they open their servers for instance and be part of an open federation?
That's one thing im wondering, my thought would be probably not given how their friend function works (i.e. you need to be on facebook to link friends, or whether they will add a whole you class of external friends to handle federated friends.
