Thanks for all the replies. Too bad gtalk blocks this (from both
the client and the server side.) This really should be a user option
in my opinion.

gtalk server supports "open federation" so it's possible for a gtalk
user to chat with a user registered on a server that, say, I'm
running. In this case would gtalk also require you to have
the "foreign" user in your roster, or would it just blindly forward
the message?
