This is very cool. In face I have done something similar to this for sensor networks. You will probably find Serverless XMPP (http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0174.html) and perhaps Zeroconf. Also the PEP XEP (http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0163.html) might be helpful for distributing events.
