As Kevin pointed out a <message> stanza with type of remove would not be valid, as that was what you originally said was being sent.
That trace however shows an <iq> stanza with type of set and sub elements to remove an item from a roster (which is not what you originally said was being sent). Which is why there was some confusion, you need to be accurate about what is being sent :-) It looks like your client is specifically requesting removal of the item from the roster, rather than just cancelling a subscription for presence. If I remember correctly in pidgin you can right click a user in the roster and cancel presence subscription rather than removing the person from your "buddy list".
