I'm perfectly delighted to be proven wrong on this, but as far as I know
GTalk on Android uses a Protocol Buffers (ie, Google ASN.2) based
protocol, not XMPP as such.

Hmm, I haven't heard before about GTalk on Android using Protobuf (not that Google has officially given any detail in either direction).

But if you look at the "GTalk Service Monitor" app (open the phone dialer, and dial *#*#TALK#*#*), you'll see mention of iq stanzas, the device JID, and Smack "SSLXMPPConnection", which all sounds pretty XMPP-y.

(Not that this necessarily proves that regular XMPP is actually sent over the wire)
