Contrary to popular belief, jabberd is not dead and is still kicking. It's not as flashy as new kids on the block, but it still steadily serves its purpose. Even got some new feature developers lately. :-) It has a pretty good documentation Wiki [1]. And if I would to recommend some other server, I would definitely go with Prosody.
