Q: I have spent a while trying to figure out how to play sounds in Java. Sun has some audio classes, but they are unsupported and not very flexible. Is there any other way to play sounds in Java?

A: Yes. Using QuickTime for Java, you can easily play sounds stored in a variety of formats. The following application example simply plays a local sound file:

I hope this helps. I haven't yet used this technique, but have used QuickTime in many other projects, and when the Java programs I am working on now need audio, this will be the first approach I try.

The last that I checked current browsers only came with a 1.1 JVM. Has
that changed? What kind of audio files can be played? Is it just .au
files? Do you have any suggestions for playing mp3 files in a browser?
