Does this 'cultural background' include arrogance and ignorance?  I noticed you didn't answer his question either.  Foo and Bar are originally from FUBAR and are basically like x and y in algebra -- its superfluous to the current problem.
 
 
Note for DW:  superfluous means not necessarily needed in this context.
