iText does not need a display to generate PDFs. We have used it in a
servlet to generate forms for us before and it works great.

Yes, we are using a Unix environment. I heard that the xvfb could cause some
loss of resolution when generating the image - not sure if it is true,
though. Actually, I am trying to find out if the pdf library (iText, for
example) will need a display or not for generating the pdf.
