I did some work with JavaCC awhile back, and it is *extremely* powerful and flexible. In particular, the jjtree aspects are very cool, providing a "Visitor" pattern that would seem to fit your bill nicely. Only drawback is that I'm not sure if there's a JDK1.4-level grammar yet -- with the new assertion syntax -- but would suspect it wouldn't be too hard to add in. IIRC, there was a JDJ article about JavaCC several months back...
