Yes i agree with you. The one that i found the best was
Core Java by Cay Horstmann. It's a fantastic book and
has a longer shelf life. The author has presented a very
unique style of coding which i have sucessfully used in
my every day life.Apart from that, the author has explained
the concepts very nicely.

There's another wonderful book on Swing called Java Swing
by Eckstein, Marc Loy and Dave Wood. I refer it daily when
i face some conceptual problems. A very nice book for the
beginners as well as experts.

IMO Core Java is the best book for beginners and Java Swing
is great for Swing.
