When Oracle stopped working on openjdk6 update releases, our friends

needs to be a staged handoff for openjdk7 as well?

There have been some thoughts and effort put into enabling someone else to lead the Project eventually.

I submitted a session on that for the FOSDEM Java devroom [0], but considering that it wasn't picked up, I don't think it's a very exciting subject outside the jdk7u-dev mailing list.

I'll have other [1], even more interesting things to talk about at FOSDEM, but if you see me in the Java devroom or at the MySQL stand, I'd be happy to chat.

Hi,

In line with prior communication [1] to this mailing list, JDK 7u80 is
the last planned Oracle-led JDK 7u release to be developed within this
OpenJDK Project. 7u80 it the last of the JDK 7 public updates [2], and
is planned for April 2015.

Users of OpenJDK builds based on this Project should therefore consider
upgrading to OpenJDK 8, or, of course, to Oracle JDK 8, depending on their
requirements.

With the planned JDK 7u80 GA date growing closer, it's time to send out
a proposal for the last two key remaining milestones:

* Mid-January 2015
- RampDown 2

* April 2015
- GA

To be clear, we won’t create separate jdk7u80/jdk7u80(-dev) forests
at RampDown 2, as this is the last release of this Project.

The JDK 7u80 PSU [4] will be released alongside the April CPU and so
at GA will contain a superset of the changes in that CPU.

Following the 7u80 GA, the applicable changes will get bulk integrated into
this Project, as has been the case for previous JDK 7 Update PSU releases.
At the same time, due to the superset nature of the PSU, there shouldn't be
many requests for approval to push into the jdk7u-dev forest in OpenJDK,
once we reach RampDown 2 in January.

New contributions should go to the JDK 9 and JDK 8u Projects instead.

Note that these timelines are preliminary only and are subject to change.
Please refer to the JDK 8 milestones definition page [3] for a summary of
what each milestone consists of. If no issues are raised with this schedule,
it will be published it on the JDK 7 Updates Project page after the
holidays.

cheers,
