Same should be true for Linux as far as I know.

No Linux is broken. There are a few places where the compiler is invoked without -m32 or -m64 and so defaults to building the native format ie 64-bit on 64-bit. See 7171653 for a problem with the sizers utility, and 7153072 in general.
