Mr. Stallman,
I am currently helping in the coordination, along with Claudio Filho, of
the OpenOffice.org effort here in Brazil. During the 6th FISL in Porto
Alegre, I was approached by Professor David Emmerich from FAMEG, a
university in the state of Santa Catarina, whose group is assisting us
in building a Brazilian Portuguese version of OpenOffice.org. He told me
of the interest of starting a formal research project in their
department related to Free Software with a special interest in
OpenOffice.org.
Fortunately Dalibor, from the Kaffe project, was also there in Porto
Alegre. The results of the talks is that FAMEG will start a research
project regarding the compilation and use of OpenOffice.org with free
Java platforms, probably as of next semester.
We are eager to assist on this project and Professor Emmerich has a
willing team of students and researchers that will be able to work
towards this goal.
Initially, this will be an independent research project but as soon as
results start to come, I think that their work will be valuable to the
OpenOffice.org community. They will also need assistance from the Free
Java community. Since I'm not directly involved in the Free Java
community, (OpenOffice.org and work take up most of my time) could you
point me to sites and mailing lists that could provide Professor
Emmerich with a foothold?
As soon as I have updates on the status of the project, I'll be posting
them to the list.
Best regards,
Roberto Salomon

A week ago I asked whether the OpenOffice.org developers want to make
interoperability with free Java platforms a goal. There has not
been a response. Is this the right place to discuss the issue?
If not, then where?
