Just a comment on using reflection:
 I pretty sure that bytecode enhancement can intercept access via reflection. 
For example, if I remember correctly, Versant's JPA bytecode 
enhancer/classloader ensured that getDeclaredFields() would only return fields 
declared by the user, but not fields that were added by the bytecode enhancer. 
I do not know whether they could (or even did) intercept calls to 
Field.getValue() to materialize the fields if necessary, but it may be possible.
Anyway, even if they intercept Field.getValue(), they may only ensure that 
reflection cannot return uninitialized fields. But I agree this would _not_ 
allow to 'hide' fields from serialization, as proposed in the previous comment, 
which effectively uses FetchGroups to control what fields are serialized, if I 
understand correctly.
