Thanks for checking... You found the issue.

My .mavenrc:
clr% cat ~/.mavenrc
echo "Maven config from .mavenrc"
export JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.8)

So that needs to be changed (or removed since it has no value).

I also looked at the difference between the api module which has an explicit 
maven-compiler-plugin:
