Doug,
This problem exists, but only with the trash applet. The trash in the 
nautilus is behaving correctly. And you are right, that to have it 
working on the trash applet gamin is needed, but for me this is another 
bug then the one that trash was not linked to the ~/.Trash and will be 
gone when gamin will be in the Nevada.
The *#6590035 describes the Trash applet that is not updating and it is 
in the applets category.
The #**6614146 is the one in the gnome-vfs not supporting ~/.Trash on 
the ZFS filesystem, which was fixed by this patch.*
