We've witnessed long running applications on linux have RSS growing slowly where active and allocated stats level off and stay where we expect them. We believe this is a combination of fragmentation in our program and failure of purge due to linux's transparent huge pages feature. We don't see this problem on kernels with transparent huge pages disabled.
