Hajj Railway in Saudi Arabia .. made in China

Chinese companies have been awarded multi-billion-dollar deals to build a
monorail in Makkah, Islam's holiest city, as well as a 444-kilometre high-speed
railway linking the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah.
"This train will be able to rapidly evacuate the crowd at the peak of the
hajj," Yang Honglin, the Chinese ambassador to Saudi Arabia, told the Telegraph
on Wednesday, February 11.
"China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) is now talking with the Saudi
Arabian authorities about the deal."
The 444-kilometre link will cut the five-hour car journey between Makkah and
Madinah to just half an hour.
The deal, worth $1.8 billion, is expected to be completed by 2013 and will have
a maximum capacity of five million people a year.
Another project also awarded to a Chinese railway builder involves building a
monorail in Islam's holiest city.
The 1.8-million-dollar deal was signed byChina Railway Corp and Prince Miteb
bin Abdulaziz, head of the commission for developing the holy cities.
The line will link Makkah with the holy sites of Mina, `Arafah and Muzdalifah,
which are visited by massive tides of pilgrims during the hajj.
The project is set to be completed over four years, but will be ready to
operate at 35 percent capacity for the next hajj season.
It reportedly include four elevated tracks intended to carry up to 20,000
passengers an hour.
Monorail, a single rail serving as the track for a wheeled or magnetically
levitating vehicle, is proving to be a more effective and viable solution in a
built-up congested city.
Millions of Muslims from around the world pour into Makkah every year to
perform hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam.
Every able-bodied adult Muslim — who can financially afford the trip — must
perform hajj at least once in a lifetime.
Cooperation
The railway deals highlight China's growing role as a contractor for
infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, which has earmarked $120 billion in
infrastructure, education and new cities projects over the next five years.
"China-Saudi ties have developed rapidly and reached an all-time high since the
heads of states exchanged their visits in 2006," visiting Chinese President Hu
Jintao told Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz.
The guest visited Wednesday Riyadh Cement company, which has contracted China's
Sinoma International Engineering to expand its cement production lines.
China is one of the top buyers of oil from Saudi Arabia, importing 36 million
tons of Saudi crude in 2008.
Its huge manufacturing economy heavily dependent on oil and petrochemicals from
Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter.
The Asian economic giant has been quietly moving onto traditional US turf in
the Middle East.
According to Chinese officials, there are now 62 companies operating in the
kingdom, employing over 15000 Chinese workers.Its trade ties with Saudi Arabia
has doubled since 2005 and rose by 65 percent last year.
