I'm trying to build the Jenkins code for the first time. Odd failure occurs.

Cloned current repository, looks like version is 1.488, I have mvn 3.0.3
installed, java 1.6.0_31, read the instructions.
first attempt:
'mvn -Plight-test install'

it pulled down a bunch of dependencies and then failed with the message:

INFO] --- maven-enforcer-plugin:1.0.1:enforce (enforce-maven) @ pom ---
[WARNING] Rule 1: org.apache.maven.plugins.enforcer.RequireMavenVersion
failed with message:
Maven 3.0 through 3.0.3 inclusive do not pass correct settings.xml to Maven
Release Plugin.

which says 'warning' right? but then says:

[ERROR] Failed to execute goal
org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-enforcer-plugin:1.0.1:enforce
(enforce-maven) on project pom: Some Enforcer rules have failed. Look above
for specific messages explaining why the rule failed. -> [Help 1]

The message above was the [warning].

Looking through the pom, I see required versions as Java 1.6.0-18 and Maven
3.0.

so, am confused as to why its failing. Ever seen this before? Any clues
appreciated.
