I wonder if this is really the right feature to implement. A more general and perhaps more useful feature would be to quickly revert job configuration changes, or generally jump back to a historical version. But that is just what the Job Config History plugin [1] does as of JENKINS-9616 [2]. Given that, is JENKINS-4819 still useful?
