The reason we get some email the list with valid emails from gmail, or other places, is that we use stopforumspam.com to check their email address, and ip address against known spammers reported to the stopforumspam. So far no spammers have been brave enough to email the dev list when they get stopped by that. It requires someone who has permissions (like me, and a few others) to validate them. There is a mailing list that an email gets sent to whenever that stopforumspam hit is trigger, which allows us to click on a link to then allow them in, if they are indeed a real person.
