On Ubuntu, we installed a newer JRE:
sudo aptitude install openjdk-7-jre
sudo update-alternatives --set java /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java
sudo service jenkins stop
sudo service jenkins start
Now the error is gone, but so far I still haven't seen campfire notifications
