Can you explain further why you think someone was planning to remove the "wipe out workspace" option from the git plugin?
Removing it would break backwards compatibility and would break several use cases, including the use case you describe.
I'd generally have immediately closed this bug report as "No plans to implement", since I've not seen any mention from anyone that they would remove the "wipe out workspace" option which exists in the git plugin.
