Possibly a bug in your JRE. May or may not have anything to do with XStream. This fix may simply have allowed Jenkins to proceed past the error reported here, on to some unrelated code which triggers a Java crash.
No, I do not know of any core Jenkins developers with access to an AIX machine for testing.
