The message could be friendlier if it printed the remainder of the offending line, rather than just the single character.
At the lime I raised the defect I don't think I appreciated that "line 1:10" meant "line 1 character 10". (Perhaps I was being stupid!)
But if it were to print explicitly and clearly what's wrong rather than in a slightly technical format, it can only help a pressured user.
