Just connected my Macbook Pro to a CentOS Jenkins master using java -jar slave.jar and the slave's /systemInfo reported file.encoding UTF-8. OS X Java runtime is java.runtime.version 1.7.0_51-b13, OS X itself in 10.9.2.
