The real ironic part is that Jenkins can send mails alright because all the three hours I tried to get the configuration correct, trying different (valid) configurations, even writing, compiling and running my own JavaMail-based test program (which BTW worked flawlessly), all of that time I was struggling with that test mail failure, all of that time Jenkins happily sent out mails about failing builds to my collaborators.

So: the only thing that fails is the authentication of the test mail. Sending all other mails works.
