I'm closing this issue as it doesn't seem to be relevant anymore. While it is not fixed in the git-client plugin, the behaviour was fixed in the git plugin 2.2.3 which now expands variables in the git repository url before adding credentials. This is an indirect fix that only works for the git plugin. But even if that will still pose a problem for other plugins, the git plugin is the most likely candidate to use the feature and other plugins could just as well expand urls.
