Current behavior seems reasonable, as SNAPSHOTS are used during development and generally:
1.502 < 1.503-SNAPSHOT < 1.503
Using a different naming convention (such as Jenkins 1.503.YourOrg) will probably resolve this without problem. This naming convention is also used for builds to investigate specific fixes: 1.503.
