The -Dhudson.model.Slave.workspaceRoot=e:/ workaround would help for systems with only a few homogenous slaves. For lots of slaves, especially slaves with different operating systems or files system arrangments, it is quite tedious/difficult to update all the slaves directories and startup scripts (or on Windows the service location) all at once.
I think there is still need/use for the ability to specify this value on a per node basis.
Btw, this is particularly an issue on Windows, where long pathnames are not fully supported yet, and, so workspace directory names are shortened as much as possible.
