A configuration option to set dpkg-buildpackage (or simply pass the desired ones) would be very welcome. Actually, the only way it to set the DEBUILD_DPKG_BUILDPACKAGE_OPTS environment variable, but it means parameters are not easily visible when checking debian package builder settings.
