If you take the path of running a script to generate your version format, you can output the value to an env file and import using the EnvInject <https://wiki.jenkins-ci.org/display/JENKINS/EnvInject+Plugin> Plugin as a build step. You can then use this as a job variable throughout your various build steps and post build actions and in turn set the build name (in the build environment section of the job) to be the variable value.
