It most likely means that you are using a version of esxi that doesn't have all the feature enabled, such as the free version of the esxi or possibly a time limited or trial version.
The plugin is designed to work with vSphere - talking to a vCenter. ESXi standalone exposes the same API, but it may be more limited under certain conditions.
