Well, 4.4 is a release version, and 5.0a6 is an alpha version. "alpha"
means still being developed, likely to contain bugs.

On the other hand, 5.0 is much faster, has a lot of great new
features, and at this point all the known bugs have been fixed. So I
generally recommend now that people should be using 5.0.
