I totally agree with you. I'd suggest you first introduce a declarative language, like
the Object Constraint Language (OCL), which does not provide procedural constructs.
Then let'em specify things in order to get practice, practice, and some more practice.
Since there is no way to do it procedurally they will learn to do it non-procedurally
rather quickly.
