Hi Folks,

Three new releases of Jess -- 4.5, 5.2, and 6.0a6 -- are now available
for download at the usual place:

   http://herzberg.ca.sandia.gov/jess

4.5 and 5.2 are minor bugfix releases that correct all known problems
with 4.4 and 5.1, respectively.

6.0a6 fixes all reported bugs in 6.0a5, includes many updates to the
manual, and for the first time implements the "logical" conditional
element. The implementation of "logical" is experimental, of course,
and is likely to change somewhat, but it works well right now and I'm
interested in feedback.

With this release Sandia is introducing a new distribution mechanism
for Jess, a hopefully less confusing one that's more in line with
industry standards. Note that the Jess licensing policy is the same;
only the way the software is distributed has changed.

Basically, what's happening is that there are two downloads for each
Jess release:

  1) A trial version, which is binary only, and which expires in 15
  days. Anyone can freely download this version.

  2) A full version, source included, no expiration. You need a
  password to download this version.

Anyone with a Jess license is entitled to download the full version;
this includes the free academic licenses. But to get the source code
and unlimited usage, you do need to send email to Craig Smith,
[EMAIL PROTECTED], and obtain a license.

Repeating this one more time: the full version of Jess is still free
for academic use, but you do have to fill out a license form (which
can be done via email.) As always, all commercial users must negotiate
a paid commercial license to obtain the full version. Low-cost
evaluation licenses are available.

If you are already a Jess licensee, you can send mail to Melissa Betz,
[EMAIL PROTECTED], to obtain a username and password.

Any questions, feel free to email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] For
questions about licensing fees and structure, mail Craig Smith,
