I just finished the article and I found it very interesting on a number of
points:

(1) Jess 7.0 is going to have the ability to reason about data that isn't in
working memory, making it possible to efficiently make inferences about
truly huge data sets.

(2) JM: If a friend had $10K to invest in an emerging technology, which one
would you recommend and why?
EJF: Robotics. I think we're on the verge of a revolution in applied
robotics. I don't mean big humanoid robots, I mean little, functional robots
like Roomba, the autonomous vacuum cleaner. I think Roomba is only the
beginning of a wave of products that will transform our living environments.

With respect to (1) most (if not all) of the forward-chaining rules engines
would simply "gag and croak" on main-drain terrabyte datasets. I have been
hearing recently about a project that uses a major vendor's rules engine
that has the development personnel running around with their "hair on fire"
because they never realized that there is a limit to just how much data can
be realistically processed with a forward chaining rules engine. Oh well,
only when they have felt the pain will they listen ! Unfortunately, we can't
use names (to protect the innocent).

With respect to (2) I started out in this business (for the 2nd time) in
1979 working in factory robotics and I now see Primitive Machine Cognition
(PMC) evolving to a reality, i.e., "if it works, it ain't AI". What was
serious academic research a few years ago in PMC is now coming out of the
woodwork and being employed in things like ROOMBA and other more esoteric
systems like UAVs.

OBTW, as posted a few days ago, I am reading (studying) the "Jess In Action"
eBook and enjoying your good writing style ! Using JessWin in conjuction
with the text examples has eliminated about 99% of the pain I felt when
attempting to learn CLIPS some years ago.

At some point in the future, I will post fragments of a private memo that I
wrote concerning my views on Primitive Machine Cognition being implemented
with rules systems.

Great article and an OUTSTANDING book !!!!!!!!

Thanks-

Rich Halsey
